FAQs - Novice Banksman Course (Slinger / Signaller) – non CSCS
A Banksman is the person who directs the operation of cranes or larger vehicles. This is an important position on construction sites as it improves the functioning of the site and vehicles and ensures the safety of operators and other people. Banksman is what we call the role in Ireland but in the US it is a “Spotter” while in Australia they say “Dogman”. The role is in constant demand and jobs on the site usually last from the beginning until the site is complete.
- Directing movement of vehicles and equipment on a site.
- Drawing up and assessing safe traffic systems for the site
- Ensuring staff and site visitors are separated from vehicle movement wherever possible.
- Directing plant operators with clear and safe directions verbally, by radio and industry standard hand signals.
- Traffic management for the site to minimize disruption and waiting times for operators.
Becoming a Banksman is straight forward and just takes a combination of experience and certification. It’s possible to become a CSCS qualified Banksman in just 6 months!
Step 1: Complete the Novice Banksman course and get the certificate.
Step 2: Complete 6 months of working as a Banksman (with Supervision from a qualified Banksman). Note: The 6 months does not have to be consecutive but it must be within 2 years - eg, you can do 3 months on one site and 3 months on another site as long as it is all within 2 years.
