Course Aim:

Our Manual Handling course provides learners with information & instruction on safe manual handling techniques which, if used correctly, may help prevent a back injury.

This manual handling training will ensure all participants are able to use the

8 principles of lifting safely:

  • Assess the task, area and load.

  • Broad stable base.

  • Bend the knees.

  • Keep back straight.

  • Palmar grip.

  • Arms close to trunk.

  • Object close to centre of gravity.

  • Move feet in direction of movement.

Who Should Attend?

Under the Safety, Health & Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, is a legal requirement for ALL staff involved in manual handling operations to be trained in Manual Handling.

Assessment & Certification:

To receive certification for manual handling, all learners must successfully complete both the theory & practical components of the course.

Certificates are valid for three years from date of issue.

For online learning, assessment is done through a recorded video to ensure you can be certified. Instructions will be provided to those doing the course.

Whenever you move, carry, lift, push or pull something, you are manual handling. Manual handling training is when you learn how to do this safely. Manual handling training is required by law for any employees who do work that involves risk, particularly of back injury, due to how it needs to be carried out.

There are 8 principles of lifting safely

Yes, the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work, (General Applications) Regulations 2007, Chapter 4 of Part 2 stipulates that all employees must have the necessary information, training and supervision to carry out any manual handling activities where there is a risk of injury and therefore must attend manual handling training.

Poor manual handling can result in many serious injuries including:

  • sprains and strains.
  • back injuries.
  • soft-tissue injuries to wrists, arms, shoulders, neck or legs.
  • hernias
  • chronic pain.
There is no set requirement, but it is recommended that refresher training should be provided at intervals not more than every three years or where there is a change in work practices that result in different manual handling techniques being required.
